English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

Southampton Township School District is committed to supporting Multilingual Learners as they develop English language proficiency while continuing to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Our ESL program provides students with targeted language instruction and support so they can successfully access grade-level curriculum and participate fully in their school community.

Identification and Services

When a student enrolls in Southampton Township School District, families complete a Home Language Survey. If the survey indicates that a language other than English is spoken or used in the home, additional screening may be completed to determine whether the student is eligible for ESL services.

Students who qualify receive instruction and support from our ESL teacher based on their individual English language development needs. ESL services are provided in coordination with classroom teachers and other support staff so that students can continue working toward grade-level academic standards while strengthening their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

WIDA Assessments

Southampton Township School District uses WIDA assessments to identify and monitor Multilingual Learners.

Students receiving ESL services participate in the annual WIDA ACCESS for ELLs assessment. This assessment measures English language proficiency in four areas:

• Listening
• Speaking
• Reading
• Writing

WIDA results help our staff monitor student progress, identify areas in need of additional support, and plan appropriate instruction.

Monitoring Student Progress

Our goal is for every Multilingual Learner to demonstrate continued growth in both English language development and academic achievement. Teachers use multiple sources of information, including WIDA results, classroom performance, district assessments, teacher observations, and other academic data to monitor student progress and make instructional decisions.

Students who also receive additional academic or special education services continue to receive appropriate supports and accommodations while participating in ESL programming.

Exiting ESL Services

Students are considered for exit from ESL services when they meet New Jersey's established English language proficiency criteria. Students who exit the program continue to be monitored to ensure they are successfully accessing instruction and making appropriate academic progress.
