What Are RTI Tiers?

At Southampton Township Schools, we know that children learn in different ways and at different rates. Our Response to Intervention (RTI) program uses a tiered system of support to make sure students receive the right level of help at the right time.

Tier 1: Support for All Students
Tier 1 is the high-quality instruction that all students receive in the general education classroom. Teachers regularly assess student learning and adjust instruction to meet the needs of their students. Many students are successful with Tier 1 instruction alone.

Tier 2: Additional Targeted Support
Some students may need a little extra support to master certain skills. At Tier 2, students receive additional, targeted instruction, often in a small-group setting, while continuing to participate in their regular classroom instruction. Student progress is monitored regularly to make sure the additional support is helping.

Tier 3: More Intensive, Individualized Support
Tier 3 provides more intensive support for students who need additional time, practice, or specialized instruction to make progress. Interventions may occur more frequently, in smaller groups, or be more individualized. Student progress is monitored closely, and the school team uses this information to make decisions about next steps.

A Flexible System of Support

The tiers are not labels or permanent placements. Students can move between levels of support as their needs change. A student may need additional help with one skill for a period of time and then return to Tier 1 support once sufficient progress has been made.

The goal of RTI is simple: identify what each student needs, provide support early, and use their progress to guide what we do next.
