Science at Southampton Township School District

Our science program is built around curiosity, exploration, and real-world understanding. Using the OpenSciEd instructional model, students learn science the way scientists actually work—by asking questions, investigating ideas, and making sense of the world around them.

Phenomena-Based Learning

At the heart of our program is phenomena-based instruction. Each unit begins with an engaging, real-world phenomenon—something puzzling, exciting, or surprising that students genuinely want to figure out. This approach:

  • Sparks curiosity and motivates learning

  • Encourages students to develop their own questions

  • Connects science concepts to meaningful, everyday experiences

Students build their knowledge step-by-step as they explore what causes the phenomenon and why it happens.

OpenSciEd Framework

OpenSciEd provides a rich, inquiry-driven structure where students learn by doing. Through investigations, hands-on activities, data analysis, and collaborative discussions, students:

  • Develop deep understanding of core science concepts

  • Use evidence to support their ideas

  • Engage in scientific practices such as modeling, arguing from evidence, and designing solutions

This approach helps students see themselves as capable scientists and problem solvers.

Our Commitment

We are committed to a science program that is engaging, relevant, and rigorous. By grounding instruction in phenomena and using the OpenSciEd model, we create learning experiences that inspire curiosity, promote critical thinking, and build a lifelong appreciation for science.
